What a time to be alive! Chris Rock roasted Hollywood's hypocrisy and diversity problems at the Oscars last night. He presided over one of the edgier shows since his last hosting gig in 2005.
It was already an edgy year that brought the reignition of the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag, and Chris Rock addressed that elephant in the room head-on with his biting racial commentary in his opening monologue.

Rock questioned why so much attention was directed to this year's Oscars when a complete shut-out has happened, presumably, every other year.
"You got to figure that it happened in the '50s, in the '60s, one of those years Sidney [Poitier] didn’t put out a movie, and black people didn’t protest because we had real things to protest at the time. We were too busy being raped and lynched to care about who won best cinematographer. When your grandmother’s swinging from a tree, it’s really hard to care about best documentary foreign short," he said.

Louie C.K. presented Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's award for Best Documentary Short for her film A Girl In The River: The Price of Forgiveness. His intro was brutally honest and prompted fans to push for him to host next year, "No, you cannot make a dime on this. These people will never be rich as long as they live, so this Oscar means something."

Priyanka Chopra presented the award for Best Editing and looked stunning in a white and floral Zuhair Murad gown. These are small steps, but they felt rather inclusive when Dev Patel and Priyanka Chopra got some of the gratuitous reaction shots that usually go to the front-row stars. We loved that Priyanka was the first cutaway shot during Chris Rock's jab at Jada Pinkett-Smith not attending.
In the major categories, Mad Max went for a huge sweep with six technical awards. It crucially missed out on the bigger awards like Best Director, which went to Alejandro González iñárritu, and Best Film, which went to Spotlight.

One of the most surprising upsets of the night came at an awkward moment. Chris Rock ran a segment where he interviewed black filmgoers who had no idea about the films nominated, like Bridge of Spies. And then Mark Rylance won Best Supporting Actor for that film, which was a shock, considering all the momentum for Sylvester Stallone in Creed.
The locks remained in the other categories. Alicia Vikander garnered the Best Supporting Actress and Brie Larson won for Best Actress. Leonardo DiCaprio finally got his Oscar for his harrowing performance in The Revenant. DiCaprio talked about climate change and thanked the Indigenous communities and actors who were part of the film.

It was a very long Oscars night, but Chris Rock was in superb form, making sure Hollywood's hypocrisy didn't go unchecked throughout the evening.
