Who'd have thought the MTV Movie Awards would correct all the glaring oversights during the more "prestigious" award shows by nominating some very deserving actors and actresses this year?
We've recapped some of the highlights below of the diverse and populist nominees:
South Asians Dominate Best Doc

Our money is on Malala to take home the Best Doc.

It's also a good day for South Asian nominees in the Best Documentary category. Malala Yousafzai and Asif Kapadia are nominated for He Named Me Malala and Amy, respectively. The two seem to be leading the pack because Malala's doc aims for a younger audience and Amy is a great documentary about an icon of our Millennial age.
Populist Movies Dominate

We hope it's a tie for John Boyega and Daisy Ridley in the debut category.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens dominated with 11 nominations, including acting nods for the diverse leads, Daisy Ridley and John Boyega. Other blockbusters — like Creed and Straight Outta Compton — that got no love at the Oscars and Globes received support from the MTV crowd.
Even Nargis Got Nominated?!

One of the biggest surprises was Nargis Fakhri's nomination for Best Fight in Spy. Hers was a very energetic and funny scene that incorporated pots and pans as part of the brawl between Fakhri and Melissa McCarthy. But she's got stiff competition in the category with the Rey and Kylo Ren lightsaber battle and the Deadpool finale, which was filmed in Vancouver's Burrard Inlet.

Michael B. Jordan is nominated for Best Male Performance

Unlike the Oscars, which ignored diversity, the MTV Movie Awards nominated fan favourites Michael B. Jordan for Creed and Will Smith for Concussion. There were deserving nominees. Lupita Nyong'o's motion-capture performance in Star Wars, and Charlize Theron's fearless performance in Mad Max were in the Best Female Performance slot.
