Starring Gillian Anderson of X-Files fame, the award-winning movie Sold is inspired by true events.
Approximately 200,000 Nepali women and girls are trafficked to Indian brothels each year. Sold's goal is not only to raise awareness but also help to provide a solution.
Producers collaborated with the Taught, Not Trafficked campaign, which works with 2,364 at-risk children in Nepal to ensure that they complete their secondary education.

Sold is based on Patricia McCormick's novel that tells the story of a 13-year-old girl, Lakshmi from Nepal, who's sold into sexual slavery in India. The movie follows Lakshmi's life from a poor but happy household into a Nepali brothel called "Happiness House" and her journey from there.
Gillian Anderson's character, Sophia, is based on humanitarian photographer Lisa Kristine. Kristine has travelled to more than 100 countries in the past 30 years to explore and exhibit human right issues — especially modern slavery.

Niyar Saikia, who plays Lakshmi, was up against over 1,000 other girls auditioning from Nepal and India. A triple-threat, Saikia can act, dance and sing so well that she earned an acting scholarship from the Indian government.

Sushmita Mukerjee plays the role of Mumtaz, the owner of the Indian brothel. Seema Biswas, Priyanka Bose and Saptarshi Basu Roychowdhury are just a few Bollywood names in the movie.
Sold has won numerous awards at film festivals and has already opened in New York and Los Angeles. It will screen in Toronto at the Magic Lantern Carlton Cinema from April 22nd to April 28th.
