Rani Mukerji is set to make her comeback in a new movie this summer.
The trailer for Mukerji’s upcoming movie Mardaani by Yash Raj Films was released on June 24. Mardaani is directed by Pradeep Sarkar, who has previously worked with Mukerji in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, and written by Gopi Puthran of Lafangey Parindey fame.
Rani Mukerji plays the role of Shivani Shivaji Roy, a resilient police officer who is handling the case of female child sex trafficking within India. The trailer starts by stating that “nearly 40,000 children are abducted every year. Every eight minutes a girl child goes missing in India.”
The controversial film is said to be based on real life child trafficking that was once operational within Mumbai. The film is set in both Delhi and Mumbai.

Usually glamorous Mukerji appears mostly makeup-free and pony-tailed in the action flick, playing a tough cop working in a Mumbai Crime Branch unit where she is portrayed as “deft at picking up hidden clues and fearless in confronting hardened criminals” in a statement from YRF about the film.

Rani Mukerji Practicing Stunts For 'Mardaani'
Shivani encounters a system of exploitation and corruption as she goes against a mafia kingpin to find a girl who has been kidnapped and smuggled outside of the city by the child trafficking mafia.
The movie required Mukerji to perform high-action stunts, including hanging from a moving bus while chasing a criminal, and various fighting scenes. It’s reported that Mukerji had to lose 13 kg in order to play the role of the fit, hard-hitting cop. She also met the Mumbai Police Crime Branch chief as well as female police officers in order to research how to enact the role of Shivani.

'Mardaani' Movie Still
Speaking with media at the unveiling of the trailer, Mukerji said, “When I did research and meet many women inspectors, I took inspiration from them. There are female officers who are not only good as male officers, but also sometimes even better. We have to change the perspective of how people look at a women police officer. This film is one step towards that change.”
Mukerji’s hard work seems to be paying off as both critics and fans are excited to see her as the bold police officer Shivani in the gritty tale of Mardaani releasing this summer on August 22. Watch the trailer for it here.
