On July 10, the world lost a great artist; actress and former dancer Zohra Sehgal.
With an impressive seven decade long career in film and theatre, the woman known for her wit and appeal to all ages, passed away in a hospital in New Delhi at the age of 102. The actress was admitted to the hospital Wednesday night, complaining of chest pain. Medical test showed that she had an irregular heartbeat and traces of pneumonia. She suffered cardiac arrest shortly thereafter, and passed away Thursday afternoon.
As Bollywood mourns the passing of a great artist, we take a look at her career and remember the legend.
Sehgal started her career as a dancer in choreographer Uday Shankar's troupe. She was a leading dancer and preformed worldwide, from places like U.S. to Japan from 1935 to 1943.

As an actress, she started her career in 1946 with Dharti Ke Lal followed by Neecha Nagar. She appeared in movies such as Bhaji on the Beach and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, and even took part in Hollywood productions such as Bend It Like Beckham. Her most recent film, at the age of 96, was Saawariya (2007).

Some of the many awards received by Sehgal include the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan. Sehgal also shared a long association with Indian Peoples’ Theatre Association and Prithvi Theatre.
Sehgal loved and appreciated life; she defied social norms and married painter and dancer Kameshwar Sehgal. Together the couple had two strong-willed and artistic kids and several grandchildren who also pursued the preforming arts.
