Hosted by Ludacris, the event kicked off Sunday May 18, and with it came the usual shameless name-dropping dates. Nicki Minaj revealed her new single named ‘Pills N Potions’ to drop this Wednesday.
Performances
The show opened with a memorable performance by Pitbull, Jennifer Lopez and Claudia Leitte to the official 2014 FIFA World Cup anthem ‘We Are One (Ole Ola)’. From top streaming star Miley Cyrus to Robin Thicke, performances were plentiful.
Our favs:
Shakira steamed up the set with her provocative ‘Empire’ track amidst a fire-blazing background.
Katy Perry all the way from Newcastle, UK, gives a birthday girl a real treat with her multicoloured neon ‘Birthday’ serenade. Imagine Dragons hit up the rock scene full throttle with ‘Tiptoe’.
Blonde invasion Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert hit the stage together for the first time clad in leather and legs up to their armpits with ‘Somethin’ Bad’.
Bom-bom shaker, Ricky Martin brought ‘Vida’ action to the Billboards with the hit song that is part of the official soundtrack to the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Highlights
But the highlight of the night goes to the incredible holographic image of Michael Jackson performing ‘Slave to the Rhythm’, the result of nearly half a year of planning, choreography and filming according to Billboard. The development of the surreal new technology meant producers of the awards show weren't able to see the final product until just eight days before the broadcast.
With 16 dancers onstage, the king of pop appeared clad in gold and red on a set mimicking that of the album Dangerous.

The second annual Milestone Award presented by Chevrolet went to Carrie Underwood, who received the honor graciously.
