Social Media Fails
We should always remember that while Social Media can help us reach a wide audience, and interact with them on a personal basis, it can also backfire for the same reason.
NYPD
Most recently, the New York Police Department learned this bitter lesson when their twitter photo campaign resulted in bad publicity instead of the good that they were hoping for.
“Do you have a photo w/ a member of NYPD? Tweet us & tag it #myNYPD. It may be featured on our facebook” – tweeted the NYPD. They were ofcourse hoping for lovely photos showing nice police officers helping out the community. What actually happened? Within a few hours, more than 10,000 images showing police brutality were instead tweeted with the hashtag. Check them out yourself!
AMERICAN AIRLINES
Automated responses on social media are rarely good, American Airlines learned the hard way.
In response to “Congrats to @americanair and @userairways on creating the largest, shittiest airline in the world, American Airlines responded “Thanks for your support! We look forward to a bright future as the new #newAmerican”.
Needless to say this was caught, the airline was panned for its bad customer service.
HMV
HMV faced wrath of its interns when it decided to fire 60 employees in January of 2013. The media savvy interns(no doubt younger individuals who understood social media better than the people firing them). The tweets went like this:
“There are over 60 of us being fired at once! Mass execution, of loyal employees who love the brand!”
“Sorry we’ve been quiet for so long. Under contract, we’ve been unable to say a word – more importantly – tell the truth”
JAFFA CAKES
The cake store decided to create an open poll on facebook(where people can add their own options) asking “What flavor Jaffa Cakes would you like us to make?”. This resulted in widely inappropriate sexual suggestions being added to the poll(and voted for) by the public. Other suggestions include Nicolas Cage Flavour, Boris Johnson Flavor, Cat Flavor,
