What was once the sole domain of high-fashion models, VOGUE magazine's April 2014 cover features Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, much to the chagrin of the fashion world.
The April cover of the so-called fashion Bible was shot by celebrity and fashion photographer Annie Leibovitz..
'The Keeping Up With the Kardashians' star was reportedly desperate to appear on the cover of the esteemed magazine and now it appears that her dream has come true.
In a nod to her relationship with rapper Kanye, Kim is seen dressed in a wedding gown and, as you browse through the issue you'll find pages of the soon-to-be-wedded couple in a cover story themed on the big day with Kim dressed in various styles of wedding dresses. The 36-year-old rapper is preparing to marry the love of his life Kim, in a lavish ceremony that will take place in Paris on May 24.
Kim tweeted: "This is such a dream come true!!! Thank you @VogueMagazine for this cover! O M GGGGGG!!! I can't even breath!"
Kanye added: "#TRILL thank you @voguemagazine."
Even though the couple are elated with the Vogue recognition, the public doesn't seem to share the same view. To say people have not been afraid to state their opinions is an understatement. Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar led the charge with a tweet that read “Well……I guess I’m canceling my Vogue subscription. Who is with me???”
One headline reads “Will Kim and Kanye Kill Vogue?” The magazine is getting raked across the coals on its own social media pages… one person Tweets, “What’s next Honey Boo Boo….?”
foxnews.com titled their post to the controversy as 'This is Kim's world, we just live in it'.
From the hundreds of comments posted across the net we tried to find positive ones, without much luck. On the magazine’s website, one person writes, “Goodbye Vogue, I will never purchase another issue,” while another says, “Just cancelled my 11 year subscription. I do not want to read about someone so disgusting in a publication that so many people previously admired. Time for Anna to step down and she can go work at TMZ which is now what I connect her publishing abilities to.”
Anna Wintour, clearly anticipating the heat, wrote in her Editor’s note, “As for the cover, my opinion is that it is both charming and touching, and it was, I should add, entirely our idea to do it; you may have read that Kanye begged me to put his fiancee on Vogue‘s cover. He did nothing of the sort. The gossip might make better reading, but the simple fact of the matter is that it isn’t true.”
Fashion Police's Kelly Osbourne came to Kimye’s defence, in a blog post titled ‘My thoughts on kim and kanye on Vogue’, she wrote: "People are even going so far as to cancel their subscriptions or bloggers are taking down the link to Vogue magazine. I don't want to even go into the awful things people have said about them. I find this disgusting. Regardless of whether or not you think Kim and Kanye are worthy enough to be on the cover … it's not your decision to make. I do believe that would be up to Editor Anna Wintour."
The backlash to the choice in celebrities on the cover basically comes from the fact that the two are not seen as credible fashion icons, Kim does have a fashion line with her siblings in Sears as well as the fashion stores, DASH. The consensus seems to be that VOGUE sold out to celebrity status and not high fashion. What do you think? Tweet us your opinion @anokhi_media
