Spring Celebrations Around The World

Holi, India
Indians worldwide welcome spring by throwing powdered and liquid colors at one another. The day starts off with people dressed in white, and ends in a multitude of colors staining clothing and body. The festival is enjoyed with delicious sweets and beverages. It has inspired many in North America to join the “Color Me Rad” runs, where people run a few kilometers while colored water is sprayed on them from both sides.

Purin, Israel
In accordance with the Jewish calendar, this holiday falls in early spring. It commemorates their rescue from the Persian Empire, and is celebrated with reading the Jewish Book of Esther, exchanging presents of foods and beverages, donating to the poor, and a large celebratory meal. Public celebration with masquerade costumes and wine drinking is also a part of this festival

Nowruz, Iran
The word ‘nowruz’ means new year, more specifically, the Persian new year. Beginning on the first day of spring(first day of the Persian calendar), it is celebrated for two weeks. After a thorough spring cleaning of the house, families get dressed in new clothes, and gather around a table with seven items placed upon it, each name starting with the letter ‘S’ of the Persian alphabet. All items symbolize positive hopes for the coming year.

Baba Marta Day, Bulgaria
Celebrated on March 1^st, the ‘Grandma March Day’ comes from the folk story of Grandma March enraged at the misbehaving brothers January and February. The anger breaks the winter spell and enables spring to arrive. Bulgarians exchange red and white colored bracelets called “martenitsi”, worn until spring makes its first appearance. They are then tied to tree branches, symbolic of a good bloom and abundant fruits. Some also wear string dolls pinned on to their clothes called “pizho”
