To bring a smile on each and every child’s face, Operation Smile, an international children’s medical charity, performs surgeries on children born with facial deformities in developing countries.
To support the cause, Zerina Derveni, Miss Universe Canada 2014 will host a fundraiser to #HelpKidsSmile which aims to contribute towards healing facial deformities in kids, bringing a much needed change in their lives. A night of contemporary live music, food and beverages, the fundraiser to be held today at MUSIQhaus, in Vaughan, an initiative to bring people together for a cause that will make all the difference in many children's lives. The entry is free.
Talking about the fundraiser, Derveni said, “A child’s smile creates melodies that are unheard of. Children are meant to always smile and when their facial deformities prevent them from smiling, those melodies stop. I want to give children the opportunity to feel the self-worth that they deserve. Every child deserves to smile. Every child deserves a future filled with hope. Let’s get together and #HelpKidsSmile!”
It's been quoted that every three minutes a child is born with a cleft lip or cleft palate. Children born with a cleft have twice the odds of dying before celebrating their first birthday. The children who survive are often unable to eat, speak, socialize or smile. In some places, they are shunned and rejected. In many cases their parents are financially unable to afford the surgeries they need to correct the defect.
As the largest volunteer-based children's medical charity providing free cleft surgeries since 1982, Operation Smile, (through the help of dedicated medical volunteers) has provided 200,000 free surgeries for children and young adults born with facial deformities. The charity trains local doctors in developing countries which in turn strengthens their healthcare systems so that more and more children can be treated.

Being passionate about humanitarian issues, Dervani is always striving to bring about positive change. She was associated with raising awareness about preventive actions against human trafficking, raising awareness on sexual harassment as well as raising donations and canned goods for the homeless in Toronto. In the future, Derveni plans to work with anti-bulling associations and promote the importance of self-respect.
As little as $240cdn can help support a child’s surgery to alter the cleft deformity. If you would like to join Zerina in her mission to help these children join her at MUSIQhaus, Vaughan, April 26th at 8pm. For further information on this event contact 905-738-8895 or email [email protected].
