The latest sports news proves there's no place for racism in any stadium.
Racism has no place in a civilized society, even behind closed doors. It’s a lesson learnt the hard way for Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling who was banned for life from the NBA and fined $ 2.5 million for the racist remarks he made in private.
Sterling’s ouster comes after celeb website TMZ posted a 10-minute recording between him and his then-girlfriend, V. Stiviano, in which they are argue about the pictures she posted of herself with African Americans. Sterling is heard suggesting that she should not bring any black people to Clippers games nor broadcast her pictures on Instagram.

Tightening the noose around Sterling, the NBA Commissioner came down heavily on the owner of 33 years, and then ordered his right-hand man and team president Andy Roeser to take an indefinite leave of absence effective immediately. Sterling’s story is just one example of how sports are still knee-deep in racism.
The NFL was called upon to follow the path of the NBA when Senate majority leader Harry Reid called for NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to rid his "league of bigotry and racism" by forcing the Washington Redskins to change their nickname. The Washington Redskins owner is on the line of fire for hiding behind tradition and not changing his team’s name. Reid said, “How long will the NFL continue to do nothing, zero, as one of its teams bears the name that inflicts so much pain for Native Americans.”

Just days after the Sterling firestorm, another controversy erupted in the sports world – but this time it was from the fans. When the Montreal Canadiens scored the winning goal in game one of the play-off series against Boston Bruins, defense man P.K. Subban became a target of online racism as Boston fans hurled a series of racist rants against him on Twitter and other social media sites.
However, the Boston Bruins issued a statement denouncing those who racially abused him. Subban was also praised for how he handled the controversy. He said, “I’ve come to Boston many times, my family has come here and it’s been great. What people may say on Twitter or social media is not a reflection by any means of the league or the Boston Bruins. You see how people come together and it’s great. It’s not just about me. The NHL has tons of players from different backgrounds, from different places around the world and that’s what makes this league so special and that’s what makes sports so special, it brings everybody together.”

After Sterling’s controversy and NBA’s swift action, it proves there is no place for racists in any stadium. So while NBA is contemplating a new buyer for the Clippers, Harry Reid’s call for Washington Redskins to follow suit is also slowly catching fire. P.K. Subban, meanwhile, is doing what he does best: Scoring the winning goals.
