San Antonio Spurs Win 2014 NBA Finals
The San Antonio Spurs clinched the 2014 NBA Finals championship title, knocking out their rivals Miami Heat in an intense game.
With their 104-87 win in Game 5, the San Antonio Spurs beat out the Miami Heat. It was a redemption song for the Spurs who lost the Finals in seven games against the Heat last year. They almost had the title in Game 6, but lost in Game 7, which was a blow to their dream run.
“Last year’s loss was devastating,” Coach Gregg Popovich said to The New York Times. “I’ve said many times, a day didn’t go by where I didn’t think about Game 6. So I think, just in general, for the group to have the fortitude that they showed to get back to this spot, I think speaks volumes about how they're constituted and what kind of fiber they have.”
It was a complete showcase of the Spurs’ roster of veterans and new players working together to put their past behind them. NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard scored 22 points and seized 10 rebounds Manu Ginobili scored 19, and Tim Duncan, in his 17th season with the team, had 14 points and 8 rebounds.
"We wanted to redeem ourselves. I'm just glad we were able to do that," said Tony Parker, who was celebrating his fourth win with the team.
The Heat was dealing with its own issues, as Dwyane Wade was hindered by his knee injury that developed into an injured hamstring in the regular season. LeBron James was also single-handedly running the show as he received meager support from his teammates during the late quarters. He did notch up 31 points for the team overall.
But the night belonged to the Spurs, who were feeling vindicated that their traditional technique had paid off. Their methodical approach that was built around throwing the ball to Tim Duncan, while respected, did not make for exciting television.
The team had shifted its offense after Popovitch realized that 3-point shooting and ball movement could be the team’s strength. It even impressed the head honchos of the league.
“You showed the world how beautiful this game is,” said Commissioner Adam Silver during the postgame award ceremony.
In the end, the players wrapped themselves in their respective home flags to celebrate the diversity of the team’s roots. Key players Duncan, Ginobili and Parker embraced and celebrated their tenure on the team with the sweetest prize since their 2007 gold rush.
