‘Ab Ki Baar, Modi Sarkar'
The Bhartiya Janata Party’s (BJP) slogan for the parliamentary elections in India that trended across social media sites during and after the election finally rang true with the party’s victory across the nation. The BJP, led by Narendra Modi, won with a historic majority, ending congress’s 10-year rule in the country. After the casting of more than 500 million votes, BJP declared single-handed victory over its archrival, the Congress party, which suffered its worst loss in history.

As the country rode the Modi wave, India’s new prime minister, Narendra Modi, took to Twitter to announce his win. He later delivered his first post victory speech in Vadodara. Thanking the people of Vadodara from where he won, he said, “Good days are coming and from today for the next five years, the journey has started. 'With all and development for all’ will be my government’s motto and not an empty slogan. I hope I will get co-operation from all political parties and leaders in running the nation.”
U.S. President Barack Obama congratulated Narendra Modi on his ‘emphatic election victory’, while the White House issued a statement saying, “The prime minister of India will be welcomed to the U.S.… This is an important relationship, a strong bilateral partnership, and the president looks forward to building on the progress we’ve made.” This was the first contact between Modi and Obama since the U.S.'s refusal to grant him a visa due to his alleged role in the 2002 Gujarat Riots. The rest of foreign media also keenly observed Modi’s win.

The Congress party was reduced to a double digit figure. The Congress party president, Sonia Gandhi, and her son and second-in-command, Rahul Gandhi, accepted defeat and congratulated Modi. Gandhi said, “We hope that the next government will maintain the unity of India. I congratulate the next government. I take full responsibility for the loss of Congress.”
Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party won four seats in Punjab, and lost in Varanasi, though only by a margin of 50,000 votes. On his party’s performance, leader Arvind Kejriwal said, “We are surprised over results in Punjab and shocked over the outcome in Delhi. We will sit in the next three to four days and discuss the results. The people's verdict is supreme in democracy and we accept that.”
As the winning numbers started rolling in, positive reactions from the stock market were palpable. The Sensex rose to a highest level of 6.1 percent.
With Modi at the helm in India for the next five years, all eyes will be on the new leader to see whether he can shape a nation that all Indians dream of.
