Wimbledon 2014: Highlights
Novak Djokovic defeats Roger Federer.
The Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships were held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club June 23 to July 6. It was the 128th edition of the Wimbledon Championships, as well as the third Grand Slam event of the year.
Wimbledon saw professional players playing singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Retired players also performed to the best of their ability in invitation doubles. Junior and wheelchair players played singles and doubles events.
The men’s final at Wimbledon 2014 had celebrities cheering from the Centre Court for the battle between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. Celebrity attendees included Samuel L Jackson, Hugh Jackman, Orlando Bloom, Kate Winslet, Kate Beckinsale and Guy Ritchie. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were also present, as was David Beckham, and his wife Victoria Beckham. Special attention had been given to the fashionista for not smiling once throughout the match.
The Wimbledon Champions for Seniors saw unexpected wins, with Novak Djokovic for Men’s Singles, Petra Kvitova for Women’s Singles, Vasek Pospisil and Jack Sock for Men’s Doubles, Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci for Women’s Doubles, and Nenad Zimonjic and Samantha Stosur for Mixed Doubles.
Djokovic, from Serbia, won his second Wimbledon title during the Gentlemen’s Singles Final match against Roger Federer. Federer, from Switzerland, is a seven-time winner of the Wimbledon title, as well as being ranked world number three by the Association of Tennis Professionals. He was also in the world number one position for 302 weeks in the men’s world records of the Open Era. He has won 17 Grand Slam singles titles.
Djokovic won by outlasting Federer in five sets on July 7. This is Djokovic’s seventh Grand Slam title, breaking three consecutive losses within major finals, as well as in five of his past six.
The most shocking of all seems to be 19-year-old Nick Kyrgios’ win against Rafael Nadal from Spain. Nadal is currently ranked as the world's number two player. He is the winner of 14 Grand Slam singles titles, a 2008 Olympic gold medal in singles, as well as the seventh player in history and youngest of four in the Open Era to achieve the Career Grand Slam – being the second male player after Andre Agassi to have completed the singles Career Golden Slam.
Nick Kyrgios from Australia was in shock after having beat Rafael Nadal in four sets on July 1. As noted by the New York Times, “the last time a teenager beat a No.1 player at a Grand Slam event was at the 2005 French Open.” The teenager that year was Rafael Nadal.
