It's time for some much needed South Asian music, food , fun, and festivities.
The ninth annual TD Mosaic 2014 festival is happening tonight from 5 p.m. onwards and will continue tomorrow, August 16 from 3 p.m. at Celebration Square, 300 City Centre Drive, Mississauga. Mosaic is the largest free South Asian culture, arts and heritage festival in North America. This year’s features include a comedy night, main stage performances, a youth stage and food and shopping areas.
And did we mention this is a FREE festival?
The festival will kick off with a Bollywood dance showcase by TD Canada Trust Dancers. Other must-see events on the first day include A Cappella: Chai Town, an Indian and American fusion performance by a Chicago-based acappella group from the University of Illinois.
Toronto-based songstress Jonita Gandhi, who has found musical fame in Bollywood after lending her voice to movies like Chennai Express and Lekar Hum Deewana Dil, will be performing alongside Bageshree Vaze, Dale Harrison and world famous percussionist Karsh Kale. It's a great evening of Canadian-Indian-U.S. collaboration that you don't want to miss! Karsh Kale is widely regarded as a pioneer of global fusion and electronica as it inspires and defines the worldwide club phenomenon known as 'Asian Massive' or 'Asian Underground'.
Be sure to catch Zeb and SANDARAA to witness a musical collaboration in Persian, Dari and Pashto, presented by renowned musicians from Brooklyn, New York, and Lahore, Pakistan. This new musical collaboration explores a vast repertoire of South Asian musical traditions blended with the sounds and sensibilities of Eastern Europe, the Balkans and New York.
The Shiamak Toronto Dance team has choreographed a special dance as the signature presentation. NachBaliye will also be performing an energizing famous Punjabi folk dance, Gidda.
On August 16, a fashion showcase by Jangiiro will follow another Bollywood Dance presentation by TD Canada Trust. Destiny Band, a local West Indian crossover band that creates a fusion of music incorporating chutney, hip-hop, Indian, soca, reggae and R&B will be performing.
Stephanie Braganza, famed for her international single ‘When We Last Kissed’, will be appearing, as well as Celia from Montreal who will be demonstrating the beauty of Indian classical dance.
Raghav, known for his hit singles ‘Angel Eyes’, ‘So Confused’ and ‘It Can’t Be Right’, will be performing a special feature from the upcoming Canadian film Dr. Cabbie.
Rekha Bhardwaj, Filmfare Award Winner for the song ‘Darling’ from 7 Khoon Maaf, and singer of ‘Kabira’ and ‘Ghagra’ for Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani will be performing Bollywood folk and sufi songs live.
Sampradya Dance Creations will be presenting a unique tribute to the phenomenal British Indian composer Biddu by using his music to create a semi-classical choreographed performance for the diverse audience of Mosaic festival.
SHIAMAK Toronto dance team will close the festivities for this year’s TD Mosaic.
Rock the Coliseum (RTC) will return in for its eight consecutive celebration of local music. RTC, Mississauga’s longest-running festival dedicated to highlighting the best independent music in the GTA with a focus on Mississauga artists, will showcase a collection of the city’s brightest talent during two days of live music.
Another initiative undertaken by the Mississauga Food Bank and the TD Mosaic Festival is to put hunger at centre stage during this year’s festival and raise awareness for the cause. Cash and food donations will be accepted at Celebration Square and food bank representatives will be on-site to answer questions about hunger in our community and how residents can get help if they need it.
