Finding the right birth control can be confusing.
Contraceptives on the market include condoms, the pill, IUD, vaginal ring, and the morning after pill. It can be overwhelming, with so many options, in choosing what's right for you. Here are some of the most effective methods; and their pros and cons.
Hormonal Intrauterine Device (IUD)
According to Planned Parenthood, the Mirena IUD is a small, T-shaped device made of plastic, which releases a small dose of progestin on a regular schedule. When the doctor inserts the IUD device, the progestin thickens cervical mucus. The thickened mucus prevents sperm from fertilizing the egg.
The added benefits are that the device lasts up to five years and is undetectable during sexual intercourse. It also reduces cramps during periods.
While the method is more than 99 per cent effective, it may lead to mild cramping or backache in the first three to six months- and may result in irregular periods.
The Pill
WebMD explains that the pill is an oral contraceptive containing both estrogen and progestin. While the estrogen works to stop egg production, the progestin keeps sperm from reaching the egg.
According to the Planned Parenthood, it is 91 to 99 per cent effective. Not only is there no hassle during sex, but the hormones can enable lighter periods, protect against acne, certain types of cancer, pelvic inflammatory diseases, and ovarian cysts. Pills cannot be skipped.
Some side effects include nausea, vomiting, and spotting. It can also lead to increased chances of serious health problems, like heart attacks and strokes.
Contraceptive Patch
Health Line explains that the contraceptive patch is a thin patch that sticks to the skin and releases hormones found in the pill – estrogen and progestin- into the body. It is 91 to 99 per cent effective.
While you put the patch on your skin only once a month, its side effects are similar to IUDs. The other disadvantages are that it may result in a change in desire of women, tenderness of breasts, nausea, and vomiting.
If any contraceptive causes uncomfortable symptoms, it is advised to communicate with you health care provider as soon as possible.
