Soldier Killed, Gunman Dead: Terrorism In Canada
Canada Is On Alert After A Masked Gunman Terrorized Parliament Hill
A soldier was killed in Ottawa before the police shot the gunman – suspected to be 32-year-old Michael Zehalf Bibeau – dead.
Treasury Board Minister Tony Clement tells Reuters, “Prime Minister (Stephen Harper) was addressing caucus, then a huge boom, followed by rat-a-tat shots. We all scattered. It was clearly right outside our caucus door.”

The crime has been linked to Islamic militants. According to Global News, Canadian authorities had already known of Bibeau. The situation is still under investigation.
CNN reports that Bibeau was a convert to Islam and had a troubled history of drug usage before his conversion. Assistant Commissioner Gilles Michaud says, "This is a dynamic and unfolding situation. I understand that people have many questions and we are committed to providing some answers as soon as we are able.”

Josh Wingrove, a Globe and Mail jorunalist, says, “If they thought that they had the situation under control, we would have been let out a long time ago. We haven't been. There's still no word on whether we will be. This is by no means a situation that is considered over."
National Post informs that as the critical situation unfolded, a security alert was sent to all buildings in the Parliamentary precinct, which were immediately on lockdown. Police asked citizens not to tweet locations of the officers as the gunfire was still continuing.

Three people were hospitalized but are in a stable condition after the shooting. One of them suffered from gunshot wounds. Although the gunman has been killed, this event has revived the terrorism fear in Canada- especially against Islamic militants and extremists. At the same time, this event is also a reminder to not stereotype a particular ethnic community for the actions of those who create chaos, disarray, and death.
