Drawing light to one’s personal “line of gratification” is the basis for self-improvement goals says the world-renowned cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Robert J. Cerfolio. “Habitual procrastination can really hurt you in the long run because waiting to take care of something that’s obviously important to you – health, money, family matters – weighs on your subconscious,” he adds.
One of the hardest things to do for most people is delaying their immediate gratification. We live in a society where we want everything and we want it now, without much consideration to its future impact. Cerfolio says, “There are many kinds of lines of gratification. For some, they’re the number of zeroes in their bank statement; for others, the curves of their muscles after they leave the gym. It’s good and healthy to look back on your hard work and admire what you have accomplished before moving on to the next task.”
As per the South Asian organization Issuu, significant improvements in your mental health can begin with small lifestyle changes. This long-reaching impact of how people respond to gratification has led to much additional research including recent neuroscience information found at Yale University. It links gratification delay to more developed anterior prefrontal cortexes which leads to higher levels of memory, problem solving and intelligence.
Dr. Cerfolio, author of “Super Performing at Work and at Home: The Athleticism of Surgery and Life,” shares tips on how to make those lines of gratification more impressive.
Be An Early Riser
The early bird always gets the worm, as the saying goes. According to Cerfolio, the human physiology is better able to handle stress of the surgery early in the morning. He says, “People are generally better off getting work done early in the day when we’re better prepared for stress and performance. And getting a job done early frees you up later in the day.”
Love What You Do
Working towards a career that gives you joy and contentment is an unbeatable feeling. If your job only is a means to a paycheck, then the job may not be the one that you may really love. Furthermore, having a negative attitude will make it worse. Make your own career a point of integrity and a means to challenge yourself to achieve your goals. Working in a career you love will allow you to happily take ownership, responsibility, and pride in what you are doing in the long term and hence, will allow you to feel gratification.
Set Specific Goals
Your goals need to be defined. Every individual should have clear goals which they can set to achieve so that the goal is manageable and will lead to the path to success. To be successful, Cerfolio suggests, “ you have to be able to define your goals by measurable results.”
Be The Go-To Guy Or Girl
This takes time, practice and the confidence necessary to want the ball in a critical situation. Being the go-to guy or girl means being willing to take responsibility and risk failing. A go-to person is also willing to speak up about problems or changes necessary in a business or organization, and suggest solutions.
