Frost Bites Is Fernandes’s First Book Of Short Stories
Recently launched, Frost Bites: 12 Short Stories of Being Away, Lost in the Coldness of North America is a compilation of short stories that depict the lives of South Asian Canadians and the immigrant experiences of life’s roller coaster journey. The stories speak of uprooted lives and dreams, stories of long-lost love and rediscovered relationships, failed marriages, child abuse, addictions, secrets and lies. These themes take shape in this provocative, jarring, gritty, darkly humorous, and memorable treasure trove of tales set in the cities of Toronto, Vancouver, Goa, Delhi, Mumbai and Punjab.
Jude Paul Fernandes’s background is rich. He comes from a family of creative people, including painters, chefs and writers. Born in Nairobi, Kenya, Fernandes's parents relocated to India to 1972. Since then, Fernandes learned Konkani and went back to discover his Goan roots. He settled in Mumbai, where he completed his studies and worked as a creative director in advertising agencies before migrating to Toronto, Canada, in 2003. He currently lives in Toronto.
In 2006, Fernandes attended the Humber College School for Writers. Soon after, his short stories were published in ANOKHI Magazine and other Canadian anthologies, like Canadian Voices II and Indian Voices. While Frost Bites is his first collection of short stories. He's currently working on a novel called The Book of the Dead, his second collection of short stories, called Lonely in Mumbai, and a novella based on his childhood experiences, called Bye, Bye Teacher.
According to Jude, “I wanted to capture the essence of starting a new life, from 'scratch,' in Canada as seen through an immigrant’s eyes. I not only drew on my own experiences of being raised in Mumbai, India, and migrating to Canada. I also wrote and included stories that other immigrants living here had related to me in a fictional format. It appeared that everyone had memories and life experiences to recount, and many a time, nobody had the time to listen. I wanted to ensure that these voices were heard and the stories told — of aspirations lost and found, of dreams and ambitions realized, of ‘reality bites,’ so to speak, that no other ethnic or Canadian author had touched upon.”
When asked about the writing process, Jude said, “I had to find my own voice. One that resonated with an ultramodern-day India and South Asian culture. Something that didn’t seem clichéd or outdated. Apparently, there are some misconceptions about life in India.” He started out by reading authors from the South Asian canon, including Rabindranath Tagore, R.K. Laxman, Mukul Raj Anand and Kamala Das.
Frost Bites has already been launched in India and Sri Lanka. It's available on Amazon.com and other online portals for purchase.
