London Is Home To The Most Expensive House In The World, And It's Not Buckingham Palace
According to a study conducted by author Julia Trello found in the website Compare Camp, Ukrainian oligarch Elena Franchuk's Kensington home is the most expensive in the world priced at US $1.58 Billion. in her study of the top ten most expensive homes, Trello also lists Indian billionaires including Mukesh Ambani and the fourth richest man in the world, Lakshmi Mittal who also owns a home in London, United Kingdom and is ranked sixth on the list.
Feast your eyes on some of the most expensive homes in the world:
17 Upper Phillimore Gradens
The world's most expensive home has been bought in London with a record £80million price tag.
The buyer of the large five-storey detached house in Kensington, South-West London, is thought to be Ukrainian businesswoman and philanthropist Elena Franchuk, a friend of Sir Elton John.
The sale smashes the previous high of £67million for steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal's home in Kensington Palace Gardens.
Buckingham Palace – London, UK
The 775 room palace, which includes 19 state rooms, 52 Royal and guest rooms, 188 staff rooms, 92 offices, and 78 bathrooms. According to Trello, the building was built originally as a “private ‘large townhouse’ for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703.”
However, King George III acquired the palace 58 years later in 1761. According to the official website of the British monarchy, the grandeur building is owned by the British state. There are about 50,000 guests invited thrice a year, entertained at guest parties, receptions and banquets.
It is also not just emblematic of the British monarchy but also an art gallery and a tourist attraction
Antillia – South Mumbai, India
Belonging to one of India’s richest men, Mukesh Ambani, Antillia has now slipped to third place. It consists of 27 stories and is one of the first “homes” if you can call it, which costs more than a billion dollars other than Buckingham Palace, of course.
The building is like no other and still seems to look like it is still under construction because of its whimsical design. Reportedly, there is 600 staff members needed to maintain the space, which houses 3 helipads and has six underground levels of parking.
Perhaps, the endearing controversy which the construction of his home ran into was that the land was originally allocated to the construction of an educational institution for unprivileged children.
This controversy underlines the growing divide between the 1 per cent and the remaining 99 per cent in the 21st century cosmopolitan India. According to the NY Times, the Ambani family only reside in the home on occassion, has caused many to criticize the family for displaying ostentatious amount of wealth while others continue to live in poverty.
Villa Leopolda – Cote D'Azure, France
Currently home to Lily Safra, Brazilian philanthropist and widow of banker Edmond Safra, this property was built for one of the mistresses of the Belgian king, Leopold II.
After his passing in 1909, she was no longer considered the owner and the venue was used as a military hospital during the World War I according to Sarah Coles of AOL. But, Trello’s research has further revealed that the dark history of this home as Lily was killed allegedly by arson and while his bodyguard continues to remain in the jail, maintaining his innocence.
Others who made it on the list are: Ira Rennert's $248.5 million home in New York, Laxmi Mittal's $222 million home in London, UK, Larry Ellison's $200 million home in California, William Randolph's $199 million home in Los Angeles, Edra and Tim Blixseth's $155 million home in Montana and Roman Abramovich $140 home in London, UK.
Which one tops you're fave list?
