Exposing Sugar As A Major Health Hazard
Sugar causes chronic diseases such as diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and may even cause cancer. Dr. Robert Lustig, an endocrinologist at the University of California, San Francisco tells Men’s Journal , “Sugar is the biggest public health crisis in the history of the world. Every substance of abuse – cocaine, heroin, you name it – has required personal or social intervention. For the sugar, we have nothing, and my prediction is that we will need both." As for cancer, Lustig explains, “The cancer story is very early. But we know that sugar drives insulin resistance, and insulin drives cancer.”?
Many international health experts have started calling sugar the new tobacco. Action on Sugar is a global campaign designed to reduce obesity and reduce hidden sugars in food. According to the The Globe and Mail, the group of voluntary scientific, academic and medical obesity experts have every reason to be upset. In a 2008 study by Harvard and MIT, researchers argue that based on the current number trends in North America, 100 per cent of the population will be overweight or obese by 2050. This group’s goal, therefore, is to reduce 30 per cent of added sugars in packaged foods- believing this will reduce 70 to 100 calories per day!
Sugar: The Hidden Menace/foxysale
The most harmful sugar comes from fructose. While small amounts of fructose are found naturally in fruits, once combined with glucose, it is used to make every type of commercial sweetener like table sugar and high fructose corn syrup. ??“Most fructose in the American diet comes not from fresh fruit, but from HFCS or sucrose (sugar) that is found in soft drinks and sweets which typically have few other nutrients," says George A Bray in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. "Soft drink consumption, which provides most of this fructose, has increased dramatically in the past 6 decades, rising from a per-person consumption of 90 servings.”??
Dr. Miriam Vos, a gastroenterologist from Emory University says, “It’s unique. It's primarily metabolized by the liver," So, if you consume excessive fructose, it is processed, and then stays in your liver producing harmful blood fats called triglycerides.? Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale Prevention Research Center tells Men’s Journal that although too much sugar isn’t good for you, he does not suggest giving up on it entirely, which can lead to food bingeing. Instead, he suggests to keeping quantities in control. ?
