The South Asian Dilemma Of Being An Overprotective Parent
Falling into the trap of being an overprotective parent can be easy, especially when you just want the best for your child. It may seem like a good idea at the time to make all the decisions for your child so that they don’t make any wrong choices, but, according to Time, the long-term effects can be negative, producing children who are fearful, anxious, and lack self-confidence.
Here are some tips to help you be a parent that is nurturing without holding on to the reigns so tight.
Trust
According to By Parents-For Parents, as a parent you should be able to trust your child to make their own decisions as they reach adulthood. They will make mistakes and from that learn important lessons. Trust that you have taught your child well and be there to offer advice and guidance when asked.
It is Okay For Your Child To Make Mistakes
In many South Asian families, there is quite a bit of pressure for parents to produce perfect children, in looks, careers and manners. With this kind of pressure you’re not allowing your child to learn from their mistakes or experiment with what works for them. Let them experience the consequences of their actions, this way, they can learn what works for them and make the inevitable right choices. Let them take risks to become stronger individuals and they’ll be ready to face the “real world.”
It’s Okay If They Earn A Few Cs
Homework is designed to educate and teach a child how to be responsible and adhere to deadlines. They will be enthusiastic about some homework exercises while trying to avoid doing others. Unless they seek guidance from you, let them learn to do their homework on their own. If they do well, they will grow from the rewards they receive. If they receive a C, or even fail an assignment, they will become more prepared, and realize life’s difficulties, as opposed to feeling insecure and anxious about failing.
