Runner’s Essentials: We Help You Choose The Right Gear.
If you have started to fiddle with the idea of giving up the couch potato lifestyle for a more serious kick start with running, now is the time to do it!
In order to loose those extra pounds that sit not so pretty on your body after the winter or to maintain the body’s equilibrium, running is a great way to keep fitness and body measurements in check.
To help you get the most out of your run we've outlined some must-have essentials all runners should have.
Running Shoes
The most important thing is to find a shoe that is specifically designed for running. Shoes made for any other sport won’t work for running or jogging.
It’s best to try various brands, styles to help you choose the one that provides perfect stability and comfort to your feet.
Nike Free Flyknit + Running Shoes (www.sportchek.ca/ CAD $194.99) & The Saucony Women's ProGrid Kinvara neutral shoe. ( USD $90, saucony.com)
GPS Watch
No, this device is not designed to look at the time and get back to work. The GPS watch is to calculate your performance, measurements and help you identify areas of improvement. Some GPS watches come with heart monitors but are sold separately.
BB-Runner, Casio and Garmin Forerunner are some of our favourites.
Polar RC3 GPS Heart Rate ( www.sportcheck.ca/ CAD $359.99)
Sportswear
Wearing good sports apparel goes a long way for anybody who is serious about running. A good quality T-shirt and shorts are necessary for a great running session. Look out for beathable and sweatproof fabrics that allow your skin to breathe as well as keeping the sweat at bay.
Under Armour Men’s Sportswear (www.thebay.com/ CAD $63.98)
Sweat Resistant Sports Bra ( UnderArmour Stability Bra/ CAD $40)
Fuel Kit
It's wise to carry something to eat in that food belt. Water and energy drinks are a necessity when you are sweating profusely and there is still a long way to go.
CamelBak Fuel Kit ( www.sportchek.ca )
Sunblock
Shielding yourself from the harsh rays of sun is something that a runner should never ignore.
There are several dermatologist approved products available in the market but it all depends on your exposure to the sun.
Banana Boat UltraMist Sport Performance Continuous Spray Sunblock SPF 30, Coppertone SPORT Sunscreen Stick SPF 30 and Hawaiian Tropic Sport SPF 45 are some of the sun blocks that have the Skin Cancer Foundation’s seal.
Banana Boat Sport Performance Spray (www.walmart.ca/ CAD $8.97)
Hat and sunglasses
Your running gear is incomplete without a running hat and a good pair of sunglasses. UV rays are just as harmful for the eyes and hair as they are for the skin.
Since the sunblock can't be smeared on the eyes, it is best to use a good pair of sunglasses and a hat for a complete protection and a good running session.
Oakley Half Jacket 2.0 XL (www.sunglasshut.com/ CAD $215.00)
Puma Logo Cap Mens (www.sportchek.ca/CAD $29.99)
