Cleansing is important to get rid of all the harmful toxins in the body.
But is the practice of detox only for our bodies? Everyday, in one way or another, chemicals enter our homes making us exposed to toxins which could be linked to cancer, asthma and birth defects.
To create a healthy living environment in her own house, parenting expert Maureen Dennis recently collaborated with Seventh Generation, a leading brand in personal and household care. She explains, “Babies are exposed to as many as 300 chemicals of concern before they are even born. That is a staggering stat. Education is the best way to empower ourselves to make small changes to our daily habits. Making smarter and safer choices can help drive major change for ourselves, our families, and the planet.”

Below outlines her detoxifying tips for the home, helping you to have a clean, and fresh start everyday.
Fresh Air Everyday
Ventilation is as important to the house as eating is to us. A whiff of fresh air is necessary to clean the house of the indoor air which is full of artificial fragrances and other chemicals. It’s important to use natural products instead of the artificial fragrances which spray an array to harmful chemicals in the house.
No Footwear Policy
Roughly 70% of the household dirt and pollutants comes with shoes and that is why its important to leave shoes at the door before entering the house. Placing regularly cleaned mats at the door to wipe the shoes is one way of leaving dirt at bay.
Indoor Plantation
Apart from instantly brightening a dull house, plants also have the power to absorb the impurities in the air. A bright orchid or lily reduces harmful VOCs like formaldehyde and xylene.
For some added freshness, fill a mason jar with boiling water and fresh orange or lemon slices, cloves, or other herbs for a zesty, natural air freshener.
Go Natural
Using plant based products instead of the synthetic ones helps in keeping the environment clean. Read the label carefully before buying a product to be used inside the house.
You can create a cleaning solution at home by simply combining baking soda and hot water.
Watch Your Beddings
Go for organic or natural fibre products which helps in a good night sleep. Many items are made from harsh chemicals which may contain formaldehyde.
Refresh your mattress regularly by sprinkling baking soda directly around the mattress (remove the fitted sheet first). This helps to reduce dust and cuts lingering smells.
Not A Child's Play
While shopping for your child’s crib or toys, buy organic and non-toxic products. The smell of a new toy means that there is a harmful chemical used in it.
When it comes to cribs, choose solid wood that is made with a non-toxic, water-based finish.
