No One Likes Regret, Especially When It Comes To Money Spent
We’ve all done it: Strolled into a store to emerge with something impractical, unaffordable, or just simply meh. Whether it’s a $2,500 Chanel bag that you absolutely needed but now can’t make rent, or a $13 Forever 21 blouse that won’t impact your account but will sit in your closet unworn, both indulgences end up evoking that feeling of buyer’s remorse.
Take heed of the advice below to help you conquer that feeling of regret.
Do Not Feel Committed To Your Purchase
Whenever we buy things, we tend to have a lifelong relationship with them – anything from books to makeup. However, you do not have to feel obligated to your purchases after you have bought them. If you bought a jacket, for example, from online and mistakenly ordered the wrong size, you can always gift it or even better resell it, it is not the end of the world. According to Melanie Penola of Likehacker, “If you know where and how to sell your gadgets to make the most back, it'll ease your conscience when buying. You won't have to worry as much about making a wrong decision.”
Do Not Buy A Product For The Brand Name
Labels are important, but to only some extent. If you are uncomfortable with the blouse or dress you bought, it is an unnecessary purchase, in spite of the brand. Senior fashion editor Thea Palad of Women’s Health Magazine suggests, “Be honest with yourself here. If you're not a fan of the look, it doesn't matter who designed it.”
Do Not Impulse Buy
Are the shoes from DSW seem tempting to you? Ask yourself if they fit and if they feel comfortable. If not, do you still want them? Ask Men says, “Never buy something the first time around. Give yourself time to mull it over. Delayed gratification and the anticipation of making a large purchase can be part of the fun, so take the time to plan your major purchases. Do your research based on brand, style, quality, and warranty, and always ensure you're dealing with a reputable dealer or retailer.”
Big purchases should be treated like big purchases.
When someone buys a big new car or a big new house, they don’t buy a bunch of smaller, cheaper houses and cars a few months later, right? So if you buy that major investment bag, why buy five other, cheaper bags soon after? This will kick in buyer’s remorse both for the pricey bag you’re not using as much, and the cheaper bags, which you know you didn’t really need.
