JFK: The Smoking Gun is a documentary commissioned by Discovery Canada that premiered in North America on Nov.3, 2013 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
It is a Canada-Australia co-production. Produced by Montreal’s Muse Entertainment and Australia’s Cordell/Jigsaw/Zapruder for Discovery Canada.
Released just weeks before the 50th Anniversary of U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, the documentary explores the alarming ‘second shooter’ theory – that it was an accidental friendly fire by an agent of the Secret Service which killed President Kennedy in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963.
It explores the work of veteran Police Detective Colin McLaren, who spent the last four years on the Kennedy forensic cold case investigation. McLaren’s work is based on the findings of ballistics expert, Howard Donahue.
The two-hour film revisits the historic event that took place at Dealey Plaza, Parkland Hospital in Dallas where the President was pronounced dead as well as the Bethesda Naval Hospital, where the autopsy was conducted.
These locations provide the backdrop to the testimonies of the witnesses and the investigation carried out by the Warren Commission, which continues to be a subject of debate till date.
McLaren’s and Donahue’s research effectively does away with Oswald as the fatal assassin. According to their investigation, there isn’t a doubt that Oswald did fire his rifle at and hit the President and Governor Connally.
However, the bullet that struck President Kennedy in the head which was the fatal shot came from an AR-15 rifle accidentally fired by Secret Service Agent George Hickey, who was riding atop the left-rear seat of the follow-up car immediately behind the President’s limousine.
According to McLaren, “For a retired detective, the assassination of J.F.K. is the Holy Grail of cold case crimes, the ultimate whodunit, which was aching for a thorough forensic analysis…A cold case study is a study of documents, each word, in context, and all testimony – but it’s like finding a needle in a haystack. It’s been 50 years since the crime happened in Dealey Plaza. Since then, millions of cars have rolled over the road and as many tourists and pedestrians have walked the streets, forever changing the feel and look of the crime scene. It’s gone, even though it’s still there… But what isn’t gone is the testimony”.
The film’s presentation of ballistic experiments, CGI and 3D animation add a lot to the viewing experience. It also gives a new perspective to our understanding of the controversy.
What makes it particularly interesting is that it applies modern forensic investigative technique to the available crime scene evidence. It also takes a close look at previously classified information to reach the shocking conclusion.
The documentary uncovers an alternative narrative claiming that there was never a conspiracy to kill Kennedy. But there was a cover-up of gigantic proportions, leading up to a fascinating new perspective on the story that most people think they have all figured out.
The inferences are revealed through simple logic and exhaustive scrutiny of key archival photographic evidence, medical reports, witness testimony and bullet science.
Bullet holes from two different firearms, the trace of smoke, a massive cover-up and a missing brain – are all thought provoking hints from perhaps the most popular cold case of the century.
Discovery.ca features companion content with the documentary that allows the viewers to analyze the evidence on their own, in great detail. The web highlights contain complete interviews, biographies, witness statements, crime scene maps, photographic evidence and computer-graphics.
Put together, all of these create larger scope for debates on the subject through Discovery’s Social communities on Facebook and Twitter.
JFK: The Smoking Gun is proof that even fifty years later, the JFK assassination poses as big a challenge to popular imagination as it did the day it happened.
