Lights, colours and joyous festivities are upon us again with the celebration of Diwali. Enjoyed by people of various faiths and religions now, the occasion has surpassed boundaries, symbolizing hope and light.
With parents showering 'extra sweet' love during the festivities, the ghee-laden mithai boxes at work and the pre/post Diwali indulgences, health takes a back seat on priorities during the festival of lights. Other than the obvious damage that you could be doing by binging on the unwanted calories, you can also end up being a victim to air and noise pollution.
Below outlines a few ways you can stay healthy and enjoy the wonderful festival.
Stay Hydrated

While gorging on all those delicacies (we aren't talking of the alcohol yet), most of us forget that we must make sure to sip on water frequently. Not only does it keep you hydrated, it also helps satiate false hunger.
Bake Instead of Fry

Instead of buying deep-fried samosas, look for healthier options. Choose roasted, baked or barbequed options, as they will keep you fuller for longer as well as being healthier.
Easy On Alcohol

Diwali drinking is something you can't avoid so use your judgement to stay within limits. Too much alcohol will dehydrate you, give you an unwanted hangover, not to forget the extra pounds that it will add. Helpful tip: Keep drinking water in between and never start consuming alcohol on an empty stomach.
Choose Bite-size Desserts

Instead of indulging in ghee-laden laddoos or fattening kaju katlis, go for healthier options made at home, such as kheer, shrikhand or phirni. Choose bite- size desserts, which satisfy your craving but are a smaller portion. Even a trail mix of dry fruits containing dates, raisins or almonds is a good option. Just don't gorge on a kilo of them!
Pollution-Free Diwali

Let's make it a safe and sound Diwali for all this year by not bursting crackers. Light up your house with diyas, indluge in festivities with friends and family. Burst no crackers for a noise-pollution free Diwali.
Eco-friendly Gifts

Go Green. Instead of loading up your gift box with fattening, sugary sweets, opt for packing a basket of fruits. Pick up a book, a plant or organic foods. Instead of using plastic packaging, go for decorative paper or boxes adding a touch of nature to your gift.
