Now before the chilly weather kicks, is the perfect time to get your garden ready for fall.
Below outines a few ideas we've collected to help you get started suggested by organicgardening.about.com:
Vegetable Garden Beds
Its time to remove old plants and foliage that has fallen on the soil.
After a final weeding, make a mulch of straw, grass clippings, or chopped leaves. These mulches can become the soil for next year's crops and help fertilize the crops for the following year.
By mulching the garden, you will also retain the moisture in the soil and protect the plants from rapid fluctuations in the temperature.
Plant Seasonal Vegetables
Cabbage, broccoli, carrots, and collards are great vegetables to grow during fall.
Broccoli is one of the best vegetables to grow during fall and is one of the least susceptible to pests, rich in vitamins and will bloom in summer and spring. You can start these both indoors and outdoors as early as July or August. In order to have the best crop output, protect these plants from the extreme weather conditions.
Carrots are one of the most popular fall vegetables. They can be stored for up to nine months, which makes it much easier to be eaten all year round. Carrots can be picked whenever they reach a usable size and are recommended to be planted in September or October so that they can be harvested later.
Collards are both cold and heat-tolerant. They can tolerate slightly alkaline soil but in order to protect the leaves, they should be grown in a cool, moist atmosphere with a balanced soil and lots of sunshine.
Mow the Lawn
Mow the lawn one last time before those chillier days kick in.
You can then go ahead and spread compost all over the garden so that you are prepared for the next spring.
Spread corn gluten meal in case you experience trouble with the crab grass. Make sure you collect any fallen fruit to prevent pest infestation and outbreak
Plant Flowers
Fall is a great time to plant.
Plant your spring bulbs including tulips and daffodils. You should complete the project by mid-October for the best results.
Trim back perennials that that become dormant, a basic clue – when the leaves have turned yellow or brown. If the plant still has green leaves, its okay for it to be left alone and wait till spring.
Bring Potted Plants Indoors
The warm, moist soil is ideal for ants and other critters to find shelter during the Fall so bring those potted plants indoors.
Make sure that you maintain the potted plants with anti-pesticide spray and with clear water. Apply fresh mulch to the soil surface to prevent the tiny potting soil fungus from forming.
