Time For South Asians To Stop Fat Shaming, These Women Prove Style Has No Size
Entertainment Aug 14, 2015
The world may not be ready for this, but here are five South Asian women attempting to take over the fashion scene with one OOTD and blog post at a time.
Big is beautiful too, and true fashion knows no size. It's refreshing to know there are women out there who embrace their curves and give many others the confidence to rock that trendy skirt or top that not only looks good on a size 0 but also on fashionistas of every shape. These beautiful brown women are just a taste of what's out there for style inspiration for any woman, any size.
Aarti Olivia Dubey
A first-generation Singaporean of Indian heritage, Dubey is inspiring others on her blog Curves Become Her. She shares her fashion frustration on celebrating Diwali: "Stylish Indian costumes are hard to find in plus sizes. They are either too baggy, in dull shades and colours or are tailored in uncomfortable fabric. It's almost a punishment for us, as if to say 'See this is why you shouldn't be Fat.'"
Ragini
For the vintage plus-size fashionista, Ragini's blog posts on A Curious Fancy and pics on her Kittehinfurs Instagram are a blessing. She provides a complete list of all her outfits and make-up in her posts.
Reeneta Dutta
A size-18 stylist and blogger who isn't afraid to share her opinions on Glamshutter, Dutta says, "It may be out of love that my friends called me moti, but terms like moti (Hindi for fatty) and chikni (Hindi for skinny) sound rather demeaning and derogatory to me. It's like I am being constantly forced to accept that I have a faulty body." Dutta not only gives fashion and beauty advice but also blogs about travel, lifestyle and food!
Beepsa Biswas
Biswas shares her lookbook on her blog Indian Curvy Chic for aspiring fashionistas. She posted, "'You are too fat', 'you are too lazy to workout', 'Shed a few more pounds and you can look good' — lines that I have heard all through my life. And then I decided that it's time to stop taking in the so-called 'good' opinions that people give me and start believing in my own self."
Khooshbu
Khooshbu's motto is "style has no size." Scroll through her lookbook on Indiancurvynista or follow Khooshbu's Instagram for plus-size inspiration.
With all these fashionistas sharing their minds and bodies — is this enough to stop fat shaming? We think so! Next time Aunty tells you to put down a luddoo, tell her where she can shove her opinion!
