Driveable Art: India-Based Artists Take Mumbai Cabs To A Whole Other Level

A crowd-funded project is breaking the stigma against graphic designers in India, one taxi at a time.
There are two visible problems in Mumbai: 55,000 taxis in the city and all of them competing against each other for customers. They strive to set themselves apart and appear unique enough to get hired from a line-up. Then you have the struggling art graduates, especially graphic designers — who, in Indian society, find themselves deemed less worthy professionals than doctors or engineers. This is how Taxi Fabric was born. The organization gives the iconic Mumbai black-and-yellow taxis an interior make-over using the car as a billboard to showcase artists, their talent and their stories — making for a memorable trip for passengers.
Taxi Fabric was crowdfunded on Kickstarter. It launched its project on July 2015 and, in just 11 days, was halfway to its goal of £8,000. It surpassed its stretch goal of £10,000 and is now at £11,000+ pounds and 219 backers, so there's no stopping it!
Taxi Fabric is also attracting notice on social media and getting some encouraging tweets.
Taxi Fabric has launched 10 taxis to date. Each of them showcases a different designer with a different story — some about Mumbai, the designer or the taxi driver. Taxi Fabric's goal is to showcase 30 designers; however, it has a lot more designers waiting in line and hoping to be featured.
Taxi Fabric launched its first taxi in April 2015, and in just a couple of months, it has come so far. This shows that there's a place for artists and their talents in India.
