Indian Rapper, Sofia Ashraf sings to the beat of Nicki Minaj's infamous song 'Anaconda' to call out corporate big wigs at Unilever.
What's a sure shot way to go viral on the internet and get the world talking about a cause that you really care about? You just rap to a Nicki Minaj beat of course – and that is exactly what Indian rapper Sofia Ashraf did. And guess what? The world took notice!
Ashraf may be known for her singing talents, but the singer's latest offering "Kodaikanal Won't" is an open letter to the corporate honchos at Unilever – calling them out on the environmental and social damage it has allegedly caused to the city she lives in. What makes Ashraf's song so powerful – she raps to the beat of Nicki Minaj's #1 American hit "Anaconda" with lyrics that are a social protest against Unilever and a open and loud cry for change and help to her city.
Kodaikanal is a city in Tamil Nadu and its residents have been campaigning for years over Unilever's alledged actions in dumping mercury – a poisonous metal into the environment of its people, both in a working and living environment. It's been said that in 2001, the giant brand's former thermometer factory in Kodaikanal, India, disposed of toxic mercury waste at a junk yard which has since led to the death of 45 people and the suffering of more than 500 residents in the city.
Ashraf's music video boldly encourages the CEO of Unilever, Paul Polman to financially compensate the former workers of the factory at its Indian branch for their exposure to mercury and to take accountability and pay up for 45 alledged deaths it caused after workers suffered from mercury poisoning – including the hundreds of lives that have been affected.
Unilever has openly denied the allegations and the responsibility. In a statement on their website the company said: “The conclusions of the CEM report is in contrast to the results and conclusions of several site assessment and risk assessment studies that have been done by independent experts and institutes over the years and we stand by the reports of the past.”
Not only has Ashraf's video gone viral in India, but it's earned a retweet from Nicki Minaj as well!
