Here's our countdown of the most expensive Indian films in history.
The battle-laden film that's earning comparisons to Zack Snyder's 300 is being made in Telugu and Tamil, along with a Hindi-dubbed version presented by Karan Johar. We decided to look back at some of the most expensive films in Indian cinema and their rising budgets.
Rajamouli is mounting his biggest film after the runaway success. The film certainly looks impressive with its seamless CGI that required 600 artists from 17 different studios across India, along with 2,000 extras for the battle scenes and 500 to 600 technicians on set.
Tamil director Shankar is known for his lavish and spectacular films, and Enthiran was no different — especially with Rajnikanth in the central double role. The film featured makeup and animatronics by the Stan Winston studio, costumes by Men In Black designer Mary Vogt and amazing stunts by Hong Kong stunt director Yuen Woo-ping.
Although we can knock SRK for overdoing the promotions for his pet project, we can't really discredit how slick and stylish the film was with the death-defying stunts and the CGI to make SRK's eyes the bluest of blues. Khan roped in 2,600 artists for the process, along with recruiting prolific special-effects guru Robert Kurtzman to design his suit.
K. Asif's magnum opus was one of the most expensive films for its time at 1.5 crores, and it remained one of the highest-grossing films in Hindi cinema until Sholay knocked it off its spot. It's easy to see why audiences were so enchanted: the colour sequence of Pyar Kiya Darna Kya cost 10 crores due to 105 rewrites of the song by music director Naushad. Asif also recruited 8,000 extras, 4,000 horses and 2,000 camels for the epic battle scenes, which makes it doubly impressive when you rewatch the film.
Mother India was the first Indian film to enter the Oscars' Best Foreign Film category, and it was director Mehboob Khan's dream project, where he bared his socialist masala messages. The film was historic for its budget that reached Rs. 3.5 million, spent on location shooting, convincing villagers to take part and even paying one farmer to flood his land for the climactic flood.
