No, these are not crazy addictions inspired by the famous TLC show "My Strange Addictions". These are some everyday but rather strange addictions. You either have one of these or know someone who has one.
Exercise
While exercises sounds like a horrible chore to many, it is a compulsive behavior for others, who are obsessed with a need for control keeping track of calories consumed and burned. People with this obsession may even skip work to exercise, and continue exercising even after sustaining injuries.
Ice Chewing
Obsessively in love with chewing on some crunchy ice? This is a condition called Pagophagia, where people crave food items with no benefits to the human body. This particulsr form of pagophagia indicates an iron deficiency anemia, and affects 18% of American teenagers.
Shopping
Compulsive shopping affects as much as 9% of Americans. Addiction results from asense of heightened euphoria.
Hair Pulling
Known as trichotillomania, the condition where one feels a compulsive need to pull hair from body – whether it be head, eyelash or eyebrows – affects approximately 11 million American. This can so severe at times that it results in visible bald patches.
Tanning
A University of Texas study finds that more than half of the people who love going to the beach can be considered tanning addicts. Almost half of these have addiction to the point where they can have substance-related disorder type symptoms. People who tan more than 8 times a month can experience dizziness and nausea et cetera in absence of enough sun-action, similar to a drug or alcohol undergoing withdrawal.
Plastic Surgery
This is so serious it has a proper name for it; Body Dysmorphic Disorder. It is the need of having repeated cosmetic surgeries, and can lead to mental disorders such as anxiety, social isolation and depression. The disorder not only comes from environmental factors such as social pressure and low self-esteem, but can also be genetic.
