Kai Po Che is an adaptation of the novel 3 Mistakes of My Life by India's most selling author Chetan Bhagat. The movie is loyal to the core aspects of the book while molding into a more commercialized approach by director Abhishek Kapoor. He debuted with Rock On which changed the dynamics of Indian cinema over all and was a huge success.
Is Kai Po Che a shot at reclaiming the same fame? Yes. Is it successful? May be, maybe not.
The story revolves around the three buddies who battle against the odds to reach their dreams.
The movie starts on a promising note with cricket, friendship, religion, politics and garba. Over the last decade the Indian cinema has cashed in most of such tales. The film is set with a backdrop of the Gujarat earthquake and Godhra Kand. It remains adhered to its main narrative without provoking the Hindu- Muslim sentiments. It does not dwell into the face of Gujarat for that isn't it's primarily intention. Yet, the movie remains the first ever to touch over the Godhra communal carnage of 2002.
And gradually, yeah, very gradually moves the plot ahead with a love angle.
The screenplay like the book is simple and uncluttered. The movie has a few high moments with the cricket and post-Godhra bloodshed but seems limping occasionally. Some are pulled off well but some are just slow paced.
The common thread of friendship runs across the movie while calling a spade a spade.
The actor-turned-director has well crafted the movie without disturbing the reality-quotient of the story.
Abhishek Kapoor has hit the jackpot with its three lead actors.
Ishaan Bhatt (Sushant Singh Rajput) has moved smoothly from television to the big screen, loosing oodles of weight and sculpting his emotion and brawn fit for the role.
Govind Patel (Raj Kumar Yadav) is impressive with his calculated performance. He is scene- stealer.
Omkar Shastri (Amit Sadh) has done immense justice to his emotionally intense role.
Manav Kaul, as the troublemaking Bittu Mama, and Asif Basra, as Ali's peace activist father, are exceptional.
Amrita Puri, the sole principal female actor, makes every moment on the screen count.
The music by Amit Trivedi is earthy and appealing. Lyrics by Swanand Kirkire are soulful and loyal to Gujarat.
The verdict: Watch it for the bromance and for the spirit it is made in. The movie spins around multi-genre and pushes the boundaries. Watch it for Kai Po Che is different and is an attempt in a new direction.
