It's Still Not Too Late To Salvage What's Left Of Your New Year's Resolutions!
Whether you have New Year Resolutions or not, 2010 offers a fresh start for all of us. With promises of prosperity on the horizon, here are a few ways to keep that New Year optimism riding on your shoulders all year long.
The start of another year marks an occasion to reflect, rejoice, and restart. Settling into the “honeymoon period” that joyful January revives, the New Year gives many a fresh opportunity to justify old habits and begin again. A clean slate, a second chance, a new beginning—we forgive ourselves for last year’s errs as we vow to get it right this year around.
But as American comedian, actor, and author, Joey Adams once humorously stated, “May all your troubles last as long as your New Year’s resolutions,” the lifespan of New Year resolutions seldom last an entire year. Many are lucky to survive an entire week. With old year commitments conflicting with New Year aspirations, optimism often takes a backseat with our resolutions in tow. That is why it is crucial to keep the buoyant spirit of New Year’s Eve riding on our shoulders all year long.
So as you get started this year, here are some New Year reminders to assist you in transforming your New Year resolutions into New Year revolutions:
Out with the new, in with the old. Adding more to our plate doesn’t necessarily make us more hungry to attain our goals. Thinking less is more means we can be more efficient and productive. So don’t restrict yourself to a list of new commitments you doubt you’ll be able to keep. Resort instead, to a list of old commitments you’ve already made, and invest the necessary time and effort to keep them blossoming in the New Year ahead.
Don’t resolve to solve everything. Fact is, life’s most significant moments never occur according to plan. Even in the monotony of everyday life with micro-managed schedules and predictable events, days eventually multiple into weeks then months, and soon before we know it, everything has changed. Hence, leave some room for the unconceivable, the yet to be, the unwritable; the life you yearn to live must conceal within it a sense of mystery, intrigue and adventure to be truly worth the journey.
Keep stumbling. Practice falling. To fully appreciate the highs, you've got to experience the lows. So, allow leeway to break a few New Year resolutions—no one asked you to go cold turkey with your new 365-day plan. Just start, and challenge yourself to stay with. A new beginning marks a fresh start to fix old ways. And anything that needs fixing takes time. Along with patience, perseverance, and passion to succeed, these are the things that will keep you sticking to your personal pledge in the long run.
The reality is, it may take you a year or it may take you more. With each passing year, we resolve to find new possible ways to attain our goals. Throughout life’s journey, the best resolutions are those that challenge our fears and test the limits of our souls—day after day, year after year. The time to step beyond our comfort cages and challenge ourselves is as good today as it was any other day. So use the time between now and 2011 to embark on a personally fulfilling journey that will want you eagerly anticipating another New Year ahead. The earlier you get started, the sooner you'll discover a way that works for you, experience joy in the process, and see yourself one step closer to reaching your goals. But the hourglass of time slips beyond our grasps with each passing day. So stop waiting, get writing, and start resolving! The New Year's already begun.
Happy 2010! Here’s to a New You this New Year!
