DeMOYO’S Spring Summer 2013 Collection At Toronto’s World MasterCard Fashion Week
Fashion May 25, 2013
Our Fashion Editor gives us the stylish recap.
Held in the studio at World MasterCard Fashion Week, DeMOYO's SS '13 began with a catchy beat touting the 'night life of the rich and famous'. It was difficult, however, to picture Kim Kardshian suiting up in any of the garments downtown LA; 'vacations of the upper middle-class' would have been more fitting. With a muted colour palette of white, grey-blue and hints of black and gold, the collection was a smattering of hits and misses. DeMOYO's SS '13 line would do well as resort-wear.
Hitting the mark? A long, black, high-waisted skirt above a crochet top; a striped, picnic-perfect high-waisted, knee-length cotton skirt with a double button closure and a side pocket; a romantic pin-striped dress with asymmetrical layers of ruffles cascading down the front that can be worn on or off the shoulder; a skin-flashing white crochet dress, and a long, gold linen skirt with a sexy slit up the front.
And then there was the questionable: While DeMOYO's crochet dresses were cute and created flattering silhouettes, they were spoiled by the addition of ribbon belts. Similarly, a black gown with a tied belt of beaded trim looked thrown together and cheapened the look, a bit ironic considering the likely cost of it. So much was unnecessary. A pin-striped dress shirt with a widened, asymmetrical placket just looked odd, while the elongated back pulled double duty by giving the model a tail and keeping her assets fully covered. The 'short in the front, long in the back' type of trend harkens to a-thankfully-defunct fad now only seen on Pabst-drinking, NASCAR enthusiasts of the South and in costume shops. I must confess, I don't get the mullet shirt: yes, I understand it's 'business in the front, party in the back'. But why?
Another dead trend that should never be revived? Zip-off clothing. A white tailored jacket would have been cute and relevant was it not for the horizontal zipper that ran the entire waist of the jacket. Like the mullet shirt, I understand the purpose of a zip-off jacket, but again, it begs the question of why? There is no occasion so pressing that would require me to zip off a part of my outfit. What is its purpose? To relieve the daily stress of switching jackets and going from office to evening? Ignore the fact that you look ridiculous deconstructing your clothing and having to carry a part of it around with you, you can go from office to evening to home on a cool night with nothing more than one garment and the tug of a zipper! And when I say 'office', I'm referring to the kind that has poles and identifies all of its clients as 'John'.

DeMOYO needs to keep it simple.Their SS '13 collection was simple, but it was the wrong kind of simple. Odd details aren't innovative and trendy, they're distracting and ultimately, they take away from the essence of what would have otherwise been a cute, summery, resort-worthy line.
