The program stated Ashtiani's SS '13 collection was a 'new twist on retro classic designs'. The description could not have been more fitting. Bubble-textured cotton, PVC, leather and silk-organza in soft pastel pinks, blues, whites and burgundies were offset by harsh geometrical shapes. The space-age 60s dresses immediately brought to mind the silver mini dresses worn by femme-bots in Austin Powers. How's that for evoking imagery? Kudos, Ashtiani, for conjuring-up intentionally repressed memories.
Through the myriad of rigid lines, triangular cut-outs and colour-blocking, the sheathe silhouette stood out the most. A particular jacket-PVC edging and a body of see-through silk organza-though highly impractical in terms of 'need', definitely fulfilled a 'want'. It's not going to keep you warm on a cool spring evening, but it's sure to turn a few heads. On the other hand, cotton and PVC dresses and shirts with see-through organza shapes? It's not something the average Torontonian is going to be wearing but the clothes could make for a fun editorial.
What Ashtiani did well were pants. Loose but fitted through the legs, they came in abruptly at the ankle and moved like a dream on the runway. Similarly, their cobalt knit tunic-style top and draped dress are easily marketable, see-through silk-organza pants? Less so. Overall, I'm not complaining; it's refreshing to see a designer step so far away from the standard seasonal design staples. Fashion should be fun, and that's exactly what Ashtiani's SS '13 collection is.
