Rating: 3/5
Starring: Arjun Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha, Manoj Bajpayee, Rajesh Sharma, Subrat Dutta, Raj Babbar and Shruti Hassan
Tevar is a remake of the Telugu super-hit film Okkadu, starring Mahesh Babu and Bhoomika Chawla. In 2013, rumours developed that Arjun Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha would take the lead roles in the Boney Kapoor film, and of course Manoj Bajpayee would play the villain. Shooting started in January 2014 and the film released a year later on January 9, 2015.
Arjun Kapoor plays the role of a young kabaddi player called Pintoo on his way to a kabaddi match. Being the kind-hearted young man that he is, when he sees a young lady in trouble, he stops to help. This lady happens to be Radhika (Sonakshi Sinha), who's in trouble with ruffian Gajendar Singh (Manoj Bajpayee). Gajendar is in love with Radhika and wants to marry her. He has also killed Radhika’s brother. Pintoo saves Radhika and, with help from his sister, Pintoo hides Radhika from the clutches of Gajendar, who orders his lackeys to find Radhika and bring her back to him.
Pintoo’s parents later find out that he's hiding Radhika. So Pintoo and Radhika run away, and he takes her to the airport so that she can escape to the United States. The only problem is that, in true Bollywood style, after she has gone through airport security, Pintoo realizes he loves her and Radhika comes running back.
Pintoo’s father, a police chief (Raj Babbar) and Gajendar show up at the airport and arrest him while Gajendar manages to escape with Radhika. Radhika, not one to keep quiet, tells Gajendar that she knows Pintoo will come for her. Gajendar decides to go and get Pintoo and bring him to her.
Once back, Gajendar and his men attack Pintoo openly. Then the reason Gajendar has never been caught becomes obvious: the home minister has been helping him. Gajendar then realizes how much Radhika loves Pintoo. He gets angry and stabs Pintoo, and he then drags Radhika away. But it wouldn't be Bollywood if the hero didn't rise from the pain one last time. He wounds Gajendar and all his men, and then Pintoo and Radhika are free to marry.
Even though this film is directed by first-time director Amit Ravindernath Sharma, it manages to be well put-together. The first part of the film makes you want to watch more, and by the second part, you're totally taken in by the action. Being a Bollywood film, it favours the hero over the villain. However, Sharma has managed to portray this trope well and still give Manoj a decent role.
Overall, Tevar is an entertaining film that won't disappoint you. It may not be a blockbuster hit, but it won't make you scream for your money back. Another plus to the film is, of course, the music composed by Sajid-Wajid, which features International singer Imran Khan in his track "Let’s Celebrate."
