Sam Smith Annihilates The Competition, Madonna Moons The Paparazzi and Obama Asks People To Join ItsOnUs.org
The biggest night in music took place last night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, where musical moguls as well as up-and-comers came out to celebrate. First stop for the stars was the famous red carpet, where the paparazzi waited in anticipation to snap the night’s most outrageous outfit choices. As expected, they weren't left disappointed.
Our "material girl" gave them a little more when she arrived clad in a vampy matador-inspired creation by Givenchy and mooned the press. Joy Villa left nothing to the imagination in an orange peekaboo plastic gown, while RiRi, who arrived fashionably late, made it a tad ridiculous with her cupcake-esque Giambattista Valli number. Aussie singer Sia made our night when she brought the Grammys red carpet back to what we were waiting for — some thought into artistic vision — when she arrived with dancer Maddie Ziegler in matching oversized white wigs and black Armani Privé pantsuits.
As for the show itself, the host of the night, LL Cool J, left the opening pizazz to AC/DC, who brought the house to its feet with “Highway to Hell” ending in a standing ovation.
Of the 20-plus performances of the night, the most memorable goes to Queen Bey, Maddy with her “Living for Love” number that showcased a stage full of horned fellas, the shy Sia’s rendition of "Chandelier" with guest appearance by comedienne Kristen Wigg, domestic violence survivor Brooke Axtell’s monologue that ended with the words “valuable, beautiful, loved” before Katy Perry’s soulful performance of “By the Grace of God” and Pharrell’s “Happy” set that was a "hands up, don’t shoot" tribute to Michael Brown.
Among the most memorable performances were a few surprising collaborations that nailed it last night. An all-time great, Annie Lennox belted out “I Put a Spell on You” next to Hozier during the “Take Me to Church” mashup. Other highlights were Usher with Stevie Wonder on the harmonica and the much-anticipated set with Rihanna, Kanye and Paul McCartney.
On top of the most surprising collaborations were the most surprising wins. Brit boy Sam Smith walked away bagging all the major awards of the night, which included “record of the year,” a tally of four awards for the night. Upon receiving the first award, the singer thanked his fans for letting him just be him, which he confessed allowed the music to flow. Album of the year went to Beck, who beat out Beyoncé, much to Kanye’s displeasure. The rapper made a cheeky throwback reference when he stage-bombed Taylor Swift by pretending to take to the stage again.
Surprise appearances of the night included the President of the United States, who was telecasted in to make a plea about ending violence against women and girls. Obama asked viewers to urge their friends to join the campaign ItsOnUs.org and help make a change. From the music family, Prince — who arrived on stage to announce the Album of the Year award — met with gasps from the audience. The icon reminded the audience that albums — "like black lives" — still matter.
