The campaign known as action/2015, which rolled out in New Delhi on January 14th, is one of the biggest global outreach initiatives, addressing world issues like climate change, poverty and inequality. It was women's rights and education activist Malala Yousafzai who announced the movement during her acceptance speech for her Nobel Peace Prize.
In support of the fifteen 15-year-old teenagers who were scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sushma Swaraj, Minister for External Affairs, with a set of requests, India’s notable figures came together and took a public stand for the launch of the campaign via social media. Bollywood actors, directors, authors, and global ambassadors as well as many public figures took to Twitter and Facebook.
Actor Akshay Kumar began the solidarity movement when he tweeted his support for the campaign, reaching over 7.2 million Twitter followers and over 14 million Facebook users. Others to follow suit were celebs Sonam Kapoor, Malaika Arora-Khan, Pulkit Samrat, Kiara Advani, Mohit Marwah, Arfi Lamba, Chandan Roy Sanyal and Purab Kohli, author Chetan Bhagat, producers Ashvini Yardi (Grazing Goat Pictures) and Ritesh Sidhwani (Excel Entertainment), TV personalities Gautam Rode, and sport stars Yuvraj Singh and Vijendra Singh — to name a few.
An open letter followed, signed by such renowned activists as actor Aamir Khan, to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, encouraging more action by the country to address poverty, climate change and equality issues. Other major names that were signed to the open letter include Queen Rania Al Abdullah, U2 frontman Bono, Hollywood actors Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Hugh Jackman, philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates, UK-Sudanese entrepreneur Mo Ibrahim, singer Shakira and 2014 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai — among others.
Although India is emerging as a revolutionary force to be reckoned with, the fact remains that one-third of the world’s poor people reside there.
action/2015 is a growing movement with more than a thousand organizations in over 120 countries asking political leaders to honour the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that were set during the global United Nations Summit for the post-2015 development agenda in September 2015 and the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP21, in December 2015.
