All-Star Weekend With Bollywood Royalty Abhishek Bachchan
This year's All-Star weekend started off slow. The eve of Valentine's Day saw the celebrity basketball game with Bollywood royalty Abhishek Bachchan. How did our boy rate? Through the first three quarters, the prince of Mumbai had logged four minutes of playing time, and by the end of the game, eight minutes total. He had one rebound, was 0–1 shooting (the only shot he took was a three-pointer that clanked off the rim), and he spent his time setting picks for other players. If any of you have played basketball, you'll know this a necessity in team ball. It's hard to hate, though I do wonder how much basketball he's actually been exposed to. Many of the other celebrities that were in the game have probably been playing the game since childhood.
Night #2, which landed on Valentine's Day, was a completely different story. This is the night I live for! The night of the skills competition, the three-point shootout and my favourite — the slam dunk competition. But for this article, I'm going to highlight the stars of the show, Stephen Curry, Zach LaVine and Victor Oladipo. Stephen Curry missed five three-pointers in his final round out of 25 shots taken in what I have to say was the most dominant three-point shootout victory I've seen since Larry Bird won in the late '80s. (I was actually two the first time Bird won, but God bless YouTube!) I know it's mighty high praise to compare anybody's shooting acumen to Larry "Legend," but this guy is absolutely there.
If there were any event that you should watch on YouTube, it's the dunk contest. The best dunks in the show rival the dunks of perhaps the greatest dunk contest ever, the 2000 dunk comp with the legendary Vince Carter. Now, I'm not going to lie. Zach LaVine was the one person in the field I knew little about. But after last night, he is, in my book, a household name. Victor Oladipo gave him a good fight with a 540-degree reverse dunk, but Zach's lankiness, hops and ball control were just ridiculous. His first two dunks were variations of each other. He stood between the free-throw line and the three-point line, threw the ball up, caught it on a bounce and then, for his first dunk, pulled the ball between his legs and jammed it. For the second dunk, he pulled the ball around his back and jammed it. The final round, he further showed that he was the best dunker in the NBA by having a teammate bounce the ball off the State Farm arm that holds up the hoop (located well out of bounds). He corralled the ball, brought it between his legs and then dunked it.
I hate to clown my boy Abhishek, but Zach LaVine and Stephen Curry really stole the show. Honestly, though, that is what the fans want. They want to see NBA stars doing incredible feats of athleticism — and night two didn't disappoint.
