If you enjoy gardening but live in the city and miss having a backyard or are a long time apartment dweller that loves a nature-friendly hobby, apartment gardening can be a rewarding hobby.
Here are some tips that you can use to add colour and greenery to your apartment:
-
Location is the key to the success of your apartment garden. You can grow your garden on a patio, fire escape, walls, and windowsill boxes. These places in your apartment are a great place to start your container garden or put some potted plants in the balcony. If you do not have a balcony or patio, you should put your plants near the windowsill or any place that receives adequate sunlight.
-
You should start small especially if you don’t have a lot of space. Focus on a small number of plants. For example, you can grow cherry tomatoes, chilies, and cilantro and viola you have a recipe for a delicious salsa. Whether you grow plants, flowers, or vegetables, you should research your plants and get appropriate containers to house them. Find a sunny spot for your herbs and vegetables. Remember tomatoes require full sun and need a deeper container to grow such as bucket.
-
Choosing the right size of your containers is vital! If your container is too small, the size will restrict the root system and will not yield a good harvest. Furthermore, you will have to water the plant more because the container will retain less water. You will also have to add mulch, pebbles, and shavings so that the container will be able to retain the moisture.
-
Container gardening is the best-recommended method of apartment gardening. You can grow a variety of plants and vegetables to your liking and choice. You can be creative when it comes to creating containers. It can be anything as long as it can hold soil and has drainage holes.
-
Choosing a good soil. Fill the containers with 2-4 inches of compost soil. If you are planting sprouts, there should be enough space around the roots so that they can grow properly. If you are planting seeds, you should scatter the seeds across the soil.
-
Water your plants regularly. While herbs should have a somewhat damp soil, they should be watered daily so that they don’t dry out. You should also do research on the plants that you are growing in your apartment. Set a clear watering schedule. Do research on how much water your plants need and water them according. Feel the soil before watering your plants and vegetables.
-
Use a hand-held cultivator (or claw) to aerate your soil. You can also use a handful of worms that you can purchase at a bait and tackle shop. They break down some of the organics so that plants can absorb them better.
-
Keep extra containers of herbs because they take up to two-three weeks to grow. If you keep extra containers, you can replant and reseed the containers every two weeks to keep the supply going.
