Do you enjoy gardening but are one of the urban residents who does not have a backyard? If so, don’t be disheartened. You can still have a garden and upgrade your balcony to a green space.
You can grow flower, plants, herbs, and vegetables to your hearts content in this space simply by purchasing containers and pots from the flower market or your favourite gardening store. If you have a large balcony, the possibilities of designing and maintaining your own garden are endless. According to Yolanda Bertaud, you can grow quite a variety of vegetables in large containers.
If you have limited space, you can still plant the seeds for eggplants, peppers, salad greens, and herbs – provided that the container, which you are using to harvest your vegetables, is sufficiently deep. If you have a larger space, you can then grow plants that require structural support: tomatoes, cucumbers, and other vegetables that have vines will grow beautifully and add greenery and colour to your balcony! You can use beams and fixtures to support these plants.
As you grow your vegetable or flower gardens on your balcony, here are a couple of pointers to help you elevate your concrete floor and transform it into a green paradise of your own home:
Decking
For apartment balcony gardeners, decking squares is recommended as the best option because they can be placed in any sized balcony. All you have to do is purchase a set and follow the instructions. The decking will raise the floor slightly but will maintain the quality of the balcony floor below.
They will also add a charm and character to your former sterile apartment balcony without annoying your landlords.
Fake Grass
Fake grass may look odd to some but it is really a convenient way to maintain your garden and popular among dog owners. Although the fake grass will require more care and maintenance, you will have to be careful that there is no leakage, which can damage the balcony floor that is underneath the fake grass.
Whether you have a dog or not, you will have to make sure that the material does not come in direct contact with the balcony floor. In addition, if the balcony gets wet, it can invite unwelcome infestation of pests, mould, and smells. Make sure you take great care when you are installing the fake grass, especially if you have pets!
Paint
If your apartment management allows you to paint, use bright, bold, and vibrant colours to add character to your balcony. You can even get paints that imitate the colours of natural materials or even stones (whatever your heart desires!). Take your time to research and find suitable paints that suit the outdoor setting and will not damage the surface you are painting on.
Be sure to follow and read the manufacture’s instructions.
Outdoor Rugs
Outdoor rugs are costly both to the wallet and to the balcony! Not only will a wet rug kept on the balcony will damage and compromise the balcony but will also crack when the temperature fluctuates during cold and hot temperatures. It will create a nuisance with your landlord and are only appropriate for balconies that are covered with awnings.
Even then, the rugs should not be affected by the rain or with the water that you are using to maintain your container garden! This is the least recommended option!
