"From Farm To Plate, Make Food Safe"
World Health Day occurs every April 7, marking the anniversary of the World Health Organization (WHO). Founded in 1948, WHO is the official health authority of the United Nations.
Each year, WHO focuses on and promotes a theme for awareness, and this year, it's food safety.

This year's goal is to educate consumers and farmers on food classed as safe to consume: free from microbes, viruses and chemicals. Due to globalization, produce coming from across the globe isn’t always as safe as it should be. This year's initiative also aims to spur governments to improve food safety regulations in a call to action. WHO is using this year's anniversary platform to emphasize the need for coordinated, cross-border action across the entire food supply chain to prevent unnecessary illnesses.
New stats released by WHO state that the most common causes of death are salmonella, E. coli and norovirus. Africa rated the highest for food poisoning, with Southeast Asia coming second. An estimated 2 million deaths occur every year from contaminated food or drinking water.
To help you stay healthy, WHO has released five key points to ensure safer food consumption:
1. keep clean
2. separate raw and cooked food
3. cook food thoroughly
4. keep food at safe temperatures
5. use safe water and raw materials
How Can You Get Involved?
Once you've tackled food safety in your home, take a look at the food safety issues in your community and see what needs to improve. Ask questions, check labels and follow good hygiene tips.
Get involved with local events, spread the word via social media and, for the active, WHO suggests forming a campaign team, partnering up and contacting the organization itself. Message [email protected] to share how you'd like to get involved.
