Trial By Error: The Podcast That Focuses On The Case Of Aarushi Talwar
Culture & Lifestyle Apr 14, 2016
If you need another true crime fix after marathoning Netflix's Making A Murderer or listening to all of Serial on your commute, then we've got the show for you.
The podcast Trial By Error – The Aarushi Files focuses on the high-profile Aarushi Talwar case.
The murder of 14-year-old Aarushi Talwar and domestic worker Hemraj Banjade captured headlines in 2008 and spawned countless columns and books — and even two movies. The podcast is produced by Ayesha Sood and Uday Baijal, with journalist Nitisha Jha narrating the episodes that follow the murders and subsequent trial.

The team had been researching for the podcast since November but were hesitant to rushing out with the podcast. “When we were first approached by Arré Digital to do this last year, we said the timeline was too tight. Ankur Tewari, Arré’s creative consultant, turned to us and said, well you’ve had eight years. In a way it’s true. I’ve been obsessed with this since 2008,” producer Ayesha Sood said to BuzzFeed India.
It's particularly timely for the podcast to come out amid a real thirst for true-crime narratives, especially with the success of NPR's Serial, which offered a fresh perspective on the murder of Hae Min Lee and her convicted ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed. Sood and Baijal have acknowledged that Serial has paved the way for their podcast to pique interests in crime fans.
"I don’t think we would have been commissioned to do this project without the success of Serial – so in that way yes, comparisons are legit. But I don’t think there is any conscious attempt to imitate or stay away from it – this is a very different story and has a different context,” said Baijal to Buzzfeed India.

The podcast was commissioned by Arré Digital. It holds the rights to Avirook Sen's book Aarushi, which was the source material for Meghna Gulzar's film Talvar. The book poked a lot of holes into the multiple trials and police mishandlings of the case. Aarushi's parents, Rajesh and Nupur, were found guilty.
Baijal and Sood have said that their podcast will delve further into the case and how the story has a uniquely Indian context that made it so compelling in the media. They've lined up multiple guests, including the family, investigators and other figures who have some stake in the story.
The producers have called the podcast a companion piece to the book since it will look at how the investigators and media scrutiny influenced and shaped the trial's outcome. "We’d like to think of the podcast as ‘post-book. Avirook Sen’s Aarushi shows you what happened, we’re trying to tell you how these things happened," said Baijal in Brown Paper Bag.
After being hooked on shows like The People Vs OJ Simpson, and The Jinx, it seems fitting that India will have its own answer to the true crime narratives that have hooked us all in. You can find the podcast on May 1st on Arré and the Saavn app on May 1, with new episodes coming out weekly.
