A teen from Pakistan became a millionaire playing video games — earning $200,000 in just his first month of professional gaming.
While some parents claim that playing video games has negative effects on their children, 15-year-old Sumail Hassan has proven that theory incorrect. He won millions with a team of expert video game players.
Originally from Karachi, Pakistan, the teen moved to Chicago with his family in 2014. His favourite pastime was and has always been to play the video game Defence of the Ancients 2 (DOTA 2). He earned $200,000 US after a month of professional gaming. His family's relocation to the United States from Pakistan proved to be useful to the teenager, who was able to play the game with a faster Internet connection than he had previously experienced.
With a fast Internet connection and a commitment to the game, Sumail shot to fame within the North American in-house gaming league and caught the attention of one of the biggest e-sports teams, the Evil Geniuses. The team's managers were so impressed with Sumail that they signed him to the team. His presence helped lead the team to an Asian championship win in China in February 2015.
Sumail's money-earning potential isn't just impressive based on his skill, but also given the sheer pace at which the teen has been able to acquire a whopping $200,000 in a month — which is much more than most North Americans earn in a year.
With his skill and speed in tow, Sumail competed with his teammates for a chance to win $6 million at the International Defense of the Ancients 2 world championships at KeyArena in Seattle. They won.
