Professor Taneja Explores Interreligious Interaction In South Asia
Vanderbilt University Divinity School announced the 2016 Mafoi Carlisle Bogitish Lecture, which will explore interactions between Muslims and Hindus at Firoz Shah Kotla in Delhi.
The lecture will be delivered by Anand V. Taneja, assistant professor of Religious Studies at the university, who focuses on religion and popular culture in South Asia. He completed his PhD in anthropology at Columbia University and is working on his book, Time, Islam and Enchantment in the Medieval Ruins of Delhi.

"Relations between religions in South Asia have been seen as marked by either competition or syncretism," he notes. For this lecture, Taneja offers another model in which religions open up new interactions without either conversion or dilution of doctrinal specificity. At the Muslim saint-shrine of Firoz Shah Kotla, strangers become friends by sharing their deepest secrets without disclosing their identities. For example, women often share stories of domestic oppression. Taneja argues that the bond of empathy shared by visitors to the shrine is therapeutic. He links this connection it to the Islamic ethic of gharib-navazi (hospitality to strangers). Taneja encourages us to rethink the role of Islam as one of ethical inheritance instead of religious identity.

The lecture will take place on February 25, 2016, at Vanderbilt Divinity School. The Mafoi Carlisle Memorial Lecture was established through a gift from Professor Emeritus Burton Bogitish and his family in honour of Mafoi Carlisle Bogitish, who was deeply interested in religions and cultures. Past Bogotish lecturers include Sharon M. K. Kugler, Richard Haglund and John McClure.
