Keeping Your Home In Pristine Shape Means Staying On Top Of Fixable Flaws
But whether the problem is a tear in your bedspread, a split seam in your toss cushion or a fallen hem on your drapes, you might not think you’ve got the DIY skills to make it all better. Fortunately, there’s an inexpensive and simple fix that requires little more than a few minutes of your time. A strip of fusible hem tape offers a simple, no-sew solution for any fabric repair — no sewing machine required.
At your local craft or sewing supply store, look for fusible tape, which might also be called hemming tape or fusible webbing. Cut the tape into short, narrow strips. It will secure two pieces of fabric together when it’s ironed between them.
Here’s how to make three common repairs around your home.
Fix a tear
- Cut a small piece of fabric (the same colour as what you’re repairing) slightly larger than the fabric tear. This fabric piece will act as a reverse patch on the inside of the tear.
- Position the small piece of cut fabric (the patch) face-up on an ironing board.
- Lay a strip of fusible hem tape over the piece of cut fabric (the patch).
- Position the torn fabric over the fusible hem tape.
- Cover the torn fabric with a cotton pressing cloth (you can use a tea towel) and hold an iron over the pressing cloth for 15 seconds on medium heat with no steam.
Close a split seam
- Cut a strip of fusible hem tape the same length as the split in the seam.
- Lay the split fabric on an ironing board.
- Sandwich the fusible hem tape between the seam allowances (the layers of fabric next to the split seam).
- Hold an iron over the split fabric for 15 seconds on medium heat with no steam.
Repair a fallen hem
- Iron the hem back in place.
- Lay the fabric on an ironing board.
- Position a strip of fusible hem tape between the hem and the main layer of fabric.
- Hold an iron over the hem for 15 seconds on medium heat with no steam.
