ORANGE IS THE NEW WORLD: UN launches #orangetheworld Campaign to end Violence against Women

Violence against women has reached pandemic proportions, with one in three women experiencing some form of physical or sexual assault in their lifetimes, according to the most recent UN statistics.
In an effort to raise global awareness and mobilize people to affect significant and tangible change, UN Women has launched 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The campaign began on November 25 and will run until December 10, World Human Rights Day, and is part of the larger UNiTE to End Violence Against Women campaign launched by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon in 2008.
As part of the initiative, people are encouraged to “Orange the World” with events planned in more than 70 countries including lighting landmarks like Niagara Falls in orange, the colour chosen to symbolise a brighter future.
And in keeping with social media trends, a special app was also launched to tint profile pictures orange and share them with the hashtag #orangetheworld.
The #orangetheworld app allows you to tint your profile pictures orange to show your support.

People and organisations around the world have begun to catch on, with the popular Facebook page Humans of Pakistan even creating a special campaign dubbed 16 Women, 16 Stories.
Since the launch of Orange the World, the page has been highlighting the achievements of women who have overcome extraordinary adversity, bucked stereotypes and persevered despite tremendous social pressures and patriarchal expectations.
From child brides, to Pakistan’s first female Formula 1 engineer, each inspiring story celebrates the achievements and strength of the country’s women, and belies the stereotypical image of the oppressed Pakistani woman often seen in traditional media.
Just five days in, the campaign has received tremendous support from Facebook fans, with each post garnering numerous shares and male allies coming out in full force to support the initiative.
Alongwith “oranging” their Facebook photo, Humans of Pakistan also extended the colour scheme to their twitter account, fully embracing the spirit of the UN campaign and #orangetheworld.
