Muslims speak out against Paris attacks conducted in the name of Islam.
ISIS has claimed responsibility for the terror unleashed in Paris last week that killed at least 129 people.
People from all around the world haven taken to social media to show solidarity for Parisians affected in the attacks, and to show that the terrorists have no part in what Islam is about.
This seems to be the expected ritual now for Muslims to go through following incidents of violence that involve attackers that claim to be fighting in the name of their religion.
Not only to take a stand against the so-called Islamic State and the extremism they preach, but also for non-Muslims across the world to understand. The hashtag #NotInMyName needed some sort of a revival to prove that true Muslims and terrorism attacks have no connections together.
The hashtag first gained attention when Active Change Foundation launched a campaign showing young British Musims challenging ISIS. The London-based organizations works to combat extremism and violence among youth.
This is not Islam and these attackers do not follow the beliefs of any religion. The ideology of terrorists is hate. #paris #notinmyname

I am Muslim, and I stand against any crime/terrorist attack committed by extremists claiming to be Muslim #PrayforParis #notinmyname

For anyone confused about what we, as Muslims, believe. Remember, terrorism is #NotInMyName. pic.twitter.com/rJ1Zn57RVe

Muslims are using social media to show that they want no part in extremism and the violence committed in the name of the religion. Hashtags like #NotInMyName and #IAmAMuslim are being utilized to show the extremists that their messages of hate have nothing to do with the promotion of peace.
Although the hashtags have been praised by many people, send a clear message and show unification, these messages have also gained some criticism. Some say the messages are unnecessary and reductive, and many Muslims are tired of continuously having to apologize for believing in Islam.
I am Muslim. I WON'T apologize for something im not responsible for. #Terrorism has no religion. THIS is my religion pic.twitter.com/zIchO9zAb4

As a Muslim,I won't apologize 4 #ParisAttacks bcoz I didn't do it. I condemned it. #terrorism has no religion, stop blaming/framing #Islam!

Assuming the worst and generalising a society of people because of their identities is a stigma that humans have been trying to fight for years. Are we going backwards?
Should forms of apologies be expected and placed on Muslims? Is asking and expecting them to condemn any act of terrorism around the world bigoted and Islamophobic?
